Elgin James: From Troubled Youth to Successful Filmmaker
Elgin James, known for co-creating the popular FX series “Mayans M.C.”, has a net worth of $5 million. However, his journey to success was not an easy one.
James spent his early years in orphanages and foster homes before being raised on a farm by civil rights activists. He became a vegetarian at a young age after witnessing animal slaughter on the farm. As a teenager, he became interested in punk rock and other sub-cultures, and found himself in juvenile detention at age 14.
After entering college, James suffered brain damage from a fight and soon found himself homeless. He eventually joined Friends Stand United (FSU), which has been classified as a gang by many law enforcement agencies. In 2009, he was arrested by the FBI on charges of extortion and sentenced to a year in federal prison.
Despite his troubled past, James received over 60 letters of support, including from Robert Redford and Ed Harris, which likely contributed to his lighter sentence. On the same day he was sentenced, he was hired by Brian Grazer to write a screenplay.
James’ career has continued to thrive, culminating in a recent overall deal with Fox 21 television studios worth several low millions per year in salary over 3-4 years.
