Shields went on to earn a full scholarship to Louisiana State University and was ranked as Baseball America’s 16th best high school prospect in 2000. He was drafted in the 16th round of the 2000 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and made his MLB debut for the team in 2006, where he played until 2012.

He was then traded to the Kansas City Royals in 2012, and in 2013 they exercised a $13.5 million option for the 2014 season.
